The Lungau region is classified as an original habitat, with its own distinct traditions and high levels of biodiversity. This may sound a little tame, yet it is one of the most beautiful natural landscapes of the region. The word biosphere denotes a habitat which constitutes a particularly valuable area for people, the environment, the economy, and includes the importance of customs and traditions. It is the third and largest biosphere reserve in Austria and acts as a model for sustainable development. For holiday-makers this guarantees unadulterated holiday experiences.

In summer, the UNESCO biosphere reserve provides visitors innumerable opportunities to be independently active in the untainted natural landscape. Hiking and cycling are the top favourite activities in the area during the long alpine summers. A well-signed footpath network leads to around 60 crystal clear mountain lakes and almost 70 huts where you can stop for delicious refreshments. There is also an extensive network of cycle paths for cyclists and mountain bikers alike. Moreover, if you want to discover Austria’s highest e-bike region, there are plenty of routes for you to enjoy.

Hours of sun and snow as far as the eye can see. Lungau in the winter is the perfect place to be. The average altitude of the region is over 1000 m which is ideal for winter lovers and those eager to don their skis. There is no limit to the activities available in the winter months.
